Michael is an archangel in Christian, Jewish and Islamic tradition. He is at war with the dragon: "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, the dragon and his angels fought, but he could not prevail, nor was their place in the heaven any longer. "He is the leader of the angels and the conqueror of evil powers. In the later popular belief, he is the supervisor of the souls that have died on their way to heaven. The famous spiritual "Michael, row the boat ashore, Alleluia!" is about the journey of the dead souls.
