What size of fireplace grate do I need?

The advantages of a fireplace grate

Utilizing a fireplace grate, fire basket, or andirons with a grate significantly enhances airflow beneath the fire, resulting in better combustion and increased efficiency. Such elevation of the wood burning fire also aids in quicker chimney warming, improving the fireplace's draft. One-piece fire grates or baskets generally offer a higher elevation than andirons with a grate, optimizing this effect further.

We offer a diverse selection of one-piece fireplace grates and andirons with wood racks, emphasizing the importance of selecting the appropriate fire grate size for your needs.

Important factors for sizing a fireplace grate

The following considerations are crucial in selecting the appropriate fire grate size:

1 | The shape of the fireplace

The fireplace grate or basket must align with the back wall. For tapered fireplaces, the grate's width matches the back, whereas rectangular fireplaces require a minimum 5 cm clearance on each side for adequate airflow.

2 | The depth of the fireplace grate or andirons with grate

The grate should fit entirely within the fireplace without protrusion, ensuring the fire remains contained. Andirons may slightly extend at the front, but not the steel fire grate itself.

3 | The width of the fireback

The grate should not exceed the width of the fireback to ensure a harmonious appearance and effective heat reflection. Proportions and balance with the fireback size are key considerations.

4 | Minimum width of the wood burning fire

We now know how large the wood grate or fireplace basket may be, but not yet how small. The size of the fireplace grate or fire box determines the size of the fire. If you want a large fire, choose the largest possible fire grate or fireplace basket according to the above considerations. For a smaller fire, a smaller fire grate or fire basket may be chosen. This too is a matter of balance in the fireplace.

The minimum width of our new fireplace grates for andirons may also be a limiting factor. At least the smallest size fire grate must fit on the crossbars of the fireplace andirons. The width of this fireplace grate is 46 cm (18.1"), which gives space for 36 cm (14.1") between the crossbars of the andirons (i.e. 10 cm or 3.93" less than the indicated width that is, the outside dimension): Narrowest fireplace grate for andirons

5 | Location of the ventilation grill in the fireplace

Consider the fire's position in relation to any existing ventilation grills to optimize draft and accommodate the grate or basket's size.
