Cooking with an antique gridiron

Our antique gridirons are all functional, designed for actual grilling in the fireplace. Typically, you grill over hot coals, adjusting the fire to produce enough heat. For optimal grilling, coals are pushed to the front, under the gridiron. The area should have a thin ash layer to prevent the gridiron from sinking. During grilling, adjust the heat by adding or reducing the hot coals. For higher heat or thicker ash layers, place the gridiron on andirons with a grate or a hanging trivet. Avoid using a blowpipe, as it can blow ash onto the food.

Pay attention to craftsmanship

Most of our gridirons are from the 17th to 18th century, available in square and round shapes. Round gridirons often feature a rotating grid. These pieces are hand forged, showcasing simple yet effective designs, and are a testament to historical craftsmanship. Having stood the test of time, these gridirons are not only functional but also sustainable.

Origin of the gridirons

Nearly all our gridirons are sourced from France, where open-fire cooking was common. They are crafted from wrought iron.

Consider the size of the gridiron

Gridirons come in various sizes. Ensure the gridiron fits the width and depth of your fireplace. There should be a controlled fire behind the gridiron to avoid overheating and burning the food. If space is limited, temporarily store the burning wood in a curfew or extinguishing pot ('doofpot'). If using andirons with grate or a hanging trivet, the gridiron should fit appropriately. You can select gridirons based on length, width, and depth.

Consider the decorative function of the gridiron

Gridirons are versatile, suitable for both cooking and decoration in almost any fireplace. Made of wrought iron, they complement fireplaces with similar materials. Choose your gridiron based on desired aesthetics; simpler designs typically suit rustic fireplaces best. They can also enhance a fireplace that is no longer in use.
