Quality assurance for our fireplace screens

All our fireplace screens are handcrafted, ensuring the absence of inferior quality products on our site. We categorize the condition of our vintage and antique items with *, **, or *** to denote quality. Though we aim for accuracy in these ratings, vintage items may not always be perfect. A *** rating indicates near-perfect condition, ** suggests some damage but functional for open fireplaces, with all major damage pictured. A * rating is for screens considered only suitable for decorative purposes due to significant damage.

Size of fireplace screen

Typically, fireplace screens are about 50 cm (19.6") high, adequate for moderate fires. For larger fires, opt for a taller screen, especially if the fire exceeds 10 cm (3.9") in height. The fireplace's interior size is also crucial.

Completely enclose the fire with the fireplace screen

Ensure the screen fits or fully encloses either the fire or the fireplace width. Multi-panel screens, like our extendable French Model screen, can adapt up to six panels. It's important for the screen to have fine mesh to prevent spark escape.

View of the fire

Select a fireplace screen that doesn't overly obstruct the view of the fire, blending seamlessly with the fireplace, especially in darker colors. Brass screens, particularly polished ones, may be more noticeable. The screen's decorative level also affects its prominence. However, an ornate screen can enhance an unused fireplace by simulating the look of an active fire.

The fireplace screen should not block too much heat

Choose a screen with mesh that's not too fine or thick, allowing heat through while blocking sparks. Avoid glass screens, as they block heat radiation, making them less efficient.

Keep small children and animals away from fire

While teaching fire safety to children, use a fire guard to maintain a safe distance for them and pets. A guard with coarse mesh may suffice for non-spark emitting fires, like those from gas fireplaces.

Pay attention to the weight of the fire screen

Consider the screen's weight, especially if it includes fireplace doors, making it cumbersome to move. Folding screens are lighter and more manageable than larger, single-panel fireplace screens.

Ease of storage of fireplace screens

Multi-panel screens are preferred for their foldability and decorative appearance when not in use, unlike larger, door-equipped fire screens that are heavy and less visually appealing when stored.

Proper style of fireplace screen

Fireplace screens, not commonly found before the 18th century, should match the style of both the fireplace and the house. From Louis XIV in France to Georgian in the UK, the choice ultimately depends on personal taste, with simple designs potentially complementing ornate fireplaces well.

Decoration of an unused fireplace

Any decorative screen, guard, or fender can enhance an unused fireplace, with safety and size less of a concern. English fire guards or fine mesh screens can add ambiance while blocking drafts more effectively.
